SKDUN World Championships 5th, 6th and 7th October 2017

Sixteen Portchester Karate Club members helped to make up the SKDUN England team that entered the 2017 World Championships held in Eger, Hungary.

Eight of the party travelled on Tuesday 3rd October in order to attend the Referee and Judges course or to participate in the training lessons led by Senior instructors from, Bulgaria, Hungary etc.

The remaining eight of the club contingent travelled on Thursday 5th October and all enjoyed an evening meal at the "Eger Hotel" in Eger. After dinner some relaxed in the Sauna whilst others enjoyed a walk around Eger.

The Kohai Cup Championships for 9th to 4th Kyus was held on Friday 6th October and Yusuf, 4th Kyu, was the sole England representative in this event. This was a major step up and his first International competition. Although not gaining a medal Yusuf gained the one thing that is not attainable in dojo training and that of course is experience of the pressure.

Saturday and Sunday were the days for the Brown and Black belt World Championships. Several of the Rengokai party were both entering the competion and also helping with Judging.

Some twelve, gold, silve and bronze, medals were won. With others coming 4th and 5th etc. A key point being that on several occasions the winner was the one to knock out one of the England team. Whilst having a comparively small team England we achieved 6th place in the overall league table of medals.

More important than the medals was the strong England team spirit and much of this was due to the "like mindedness" of the England contingent. .

The England team consisted of karateka from a range of clubs and orgainsations, stretching from Plymouth to Bognor Regis and up to London. The overall England team consisting of twenty nine people.

Sensei Colin Putt 8th Dan was the World Championships Chief Referee and Sensei Merv O'Donnell 8th Dan was the England team manager.
